There are two ways to look at this sentence. First aspect: If the person wants to pay cost of someone's genuineness and honestness than the only way is being as genuine and honest as the other person is.
Second aspect: the cost for the person who is being genuine and being honest is actually to being faithful to their own soul not to expecting anything from other person.

But it doesn't come with the freebies that come being the opposite :P
